New technologies, global environmental hazards and rapidly merging markets are transforming the pace and principles of social interaction. Modern cooperative businesses actively coproduce fundamental changes of their political, business and cultural environments. In the process, cooperative principles and organizational concepts themselves become the subject of renovation and revitalization. This ICA - CCR European Research Conference will discuss the various roles of cooperative organizations in ongoing transformations. Located between East and West, the city of Berlin stands as a symbol for systemic transformations and provides the ideal background for discussing cooperative transformations. What roles can organizations based on voluntary membership, economic cooperation and democratic rule play in key areas like business transformation, sustainable resource management, democratization or civil society activation? What new areas and spaces may cooperative business models occupy? What can the various cooperative networks and associations at different levels of aggregation contribute? At the level of single entities, conference participants will discuss how cooperatives manage change and how they influence the speed by which members and communities are affected. Across societal and organizational tiers (up to the ICA or the EU levels), participants will discuss the role of cooperative networks and associations as potential knowledge brokers and co-designers of fundamental change processes.
